It seems everyone and their neighbor are investing in backyard fire pits and it is easy to see why. There is nothing nicer than entertaining your family and friends around a glowing fire. It is the perfect end to day spent outside in your garden.
So should you buy a fire pit or should you build one? The answer will depend a lot on your personal preference and circumstances. If you have animals or young children, you may decide to buy one of the many outdoor fireplaces on sale.
Some models are more child friendly than others. Rather than an open flame you would probably want to select a model with a door or fire screen.
Most shop bought models are portable. The same can’t be said for the backyard fire pits you design and build yourself. If you are confident that you and your family will use the outdoor fireplace a lot, you might decide that a permanent fixture is a great idea. If you are going to build your own fire pit make sure you follow all of the safety precautions. Some people will try to cut expenses by using rocks rather than buying cement bricks. This could be dangerous as the rocks can explode if they have pockets of water inside. You cannot tell just by looking at the rocks and you won’t know until they explode when heated.
Although backyard fire pits are not large structures you still need to follow the right procedure when building. You need to use gravel for proper drainage. You need to build the wall around the pit in a similar way to how you would build an ordinary wall. If you are unsure of the technique, you could buy a building kit as the bricks are marked to allow for proper construction. Remember to leave some air holes as this will help your fire.
