Measure the room. Do not buy any piece of furniture without knowing it will fit. I have had so many customers order items from me and get home only to discover it won’t even fit in their room. Most all sellers provided measurements. If they do not, don’t hesitate to ask them. They should know. To make it easy and to really visualize the furniture in your home, lay ribbon (or some other marking object), in the areas the furniture will sit. This goes for your coffee set as well. I have had the same thing happen with the coffee table and end tables.
Shop around. Don’t be impulsive. This could cost you hundreds of dollars. I sell a sofa and loveseat for $499 and have seen the same sofa and loveseat for $999. Folks, this is $500 we are talking about. Do your homework especially with furniture. You would be amazed at the different mark ups there are on furniture. Keep in mind, the bigger the store, most likely the bigger the mark up. They have to pay more to keep their doors open. Find great bargains here: Craigslist, Backpage, Kijiji, eBay, and Yellow Pages. You can do all the comparison shopping you need to right from your home computer.
Microfiber, Leather, Faux leather, Cotton? Which do you choose? Hands down, the old school cotton couches are being replaced with microfiber. And for good reason too. Microfiber is soft (feels like suede) and easy to clean. My first couch was a cotton/polyester and it was very hard to work with messes. With microfiber, all you have to do is use alittle soap and water. Leather/Faux leather are great options if you do not have animals with nails. So many times, I have customers get this type of material because of animals (easy to clean, etc), only to discover they have to replace it when the animals nails scratch, rip, and destroy their new couch. It’s cheaper to have someone clean your microfiber seat cushions (if you do not want to do it yourself) than it is to buy a new couch because nails penetrated it.
Sofa/Loveseat combo or Sectional. Look at your room. A sofa/loveseat combo allows you to place pieces all over the place such as across from each other, next to each other, side by side, etc. A sectional is like a sofa and loveseat connected and usually can only go one way. When you are shopping for a sectional, make sure you ask the dealer which side the chaise goes on and be sure your room is situated to handle it.
